Hello, this is Rico.

Tokyo has been selected for the 2020 Olympics City. Japanese media are celebrating it like crazy now. The last Olympics in Japan were held in Nagano when I was in an elementary school, but the last Olympics in Tokyo were held in 1964 before my mother was born. Thus, I don’t have the real feeling of what it was like.

Apparently, the last Olympics in Tokyo were held after the Japanese post-war miracle, which showed the rebirth of Japan internationally after the war, and it was the first Olympic ever held in a colored nation. The bullet trains and infrastructures in Japan were prepared for the Olympics. Moreover, Khrushchev in Soviet was resigned, China made its first nuclear experiment, and Dr. Martin Luther King was announced for the Nobel Laureate while it was held in Tokyo. It was the time representing the post-war era period of the 20th century.

However, what’s it like in 2020? What are we doing in 7 years?

The new stadium for the 2020 is flamboyant and futuristic, and it has the feeling of the bright future. Japan has experienced a difficult time after the long economical difficulty and serious earthquakes. Now, Japan has the hope for the revival. The citizens have reflected the hope of the past glory towards the future.

Could Japan revive in 7 years? Could Japan make a good Olympics honoring the past?

The answer of the question can only be answered by the youth of Japanese new generation. The future was always built from the new generation throughout the history.

I want to see the Tokyo Olympics with the current young generation of Tokyo New Cinema in 2020.

２０２０年のオリンピック開催地が東京に決まり、新聞もテレビもお祭り騒ぎですね。長野で冬季オリンピックが開催されたのは私が小学生の頃で、1964年の東京オリンピックが開催されたのは母が生まれる以前の事でしたのでオリンピックが以前も東京で開催された事にあまり実感を持てないでいます。

しかし東京オリンピックは日本が敗戦から「東洋の奇跡」と呼ばれた高度経済成長を得て、国際社会に復活を示したシンボル的な大会であり、史上初の有色人種国家での開催だったらしいです。また、首都高や東海道新幹線などのインフラが国内で整備され、1964年の開催時にはソ連のフルシチョフ首相が解任、中国は初の核実験を行い、キング牧師のノーベル平和賞の受賞が決った、まさに戦後の昭和という激動の時代を象徴する大会でした。

はたして7年後のオリンピックはどうなっているのか。私たちは２０２０年になにをしているのか。

「新国立競技場」のデザインは未来的であり美麗で、これからの新しい時代を感じさせます。日本は「失われた20年」と呼ばれる不況や度重なる大震災による大打撃を受けました。しかし現在は復興の兆しが見え始め、いま日本人は新しい時代への希望を過去の栄光である東京オリンピックに重ね合わせているのだと思います。

はたして7年後の東京オリンピックまでに日本は完全復活を成すのか、そして先人に恥じないオリンピックに出来るのか。

その答えは、いまの若者が持っているのだと思います。未来を築くのはいつの時代も若者達です。

新しい東京でのオリンピックを今の若い世代と7年後に見てみたい。そして願わくば、Tokyo New Cinema も世界に誇れる団体でありたい。
